Chronicles of Vishwanathapura

The Agrahara on the Tunga Banks

The Sanctuary on the Tunga

Situated at the confluence of nature and divinity, Vishwanathapura is a historic Agrahara located just 15 km from the sacred Sringeri Sharada Peetham. Nestled between lush green hills to the east and the northward-flowing Tunga River to the west, it was established by Vedic scholars who migrated from the Kundapura region. Local lore suggests the settlement was founded during the glorious reign of King Harihara Raya of the Vijayanagara Empire.

Mythology: The Hari-Hara Sanctum

The Agrahara is distinct for its balanced spiritual landscape. The Sringeri side hosts the Gangavisheshwara, Udhava Ganapati, and Anjaneya temples, while the Koppa side houses the Lakshmi Venkataramana Temple. This dual focus honors the "Hari-Hara" tradition, born from the legend of Bhasmasura. It is said that when Shiva sought refuge from the demon, Vishnu intervened to protect him here, making it a sacred land where both deities offer protection in harmony.

The Ancestral Guardians

For generations, the spiritual traditions of Vishwanathapura have been preserved by dedicated administrators. Starting with Vishweshwara, who arrived from Kundapura and established the Navaratri traditions, the lineage has continued through Timmappayya, Shankara Rao, and Gopala Rao. Notably, U.G. Shankara Rao managed the Agrahara's responsibilities until 1977, followed by his descendants Vishweshwaraiah, Gopalaraya, and Palachandraraya.
